'Til next time!
Recently, Kathleen and I attended ThrillerFest-a conference for well-known, new, and aspiring thriller writers. While there, we had the exciting opportunity to meet many of Steve and Elizabeth Berry's friends, including Michael Palmer, John Lescroart, David Morrell, and Brad Meltzer (who just happens to be Jewish!)! We will be featuring these authors and more on our Facebook page throughout the coming week!
In addition to meeting these wonderful authors, we were able to see Steve receive the Silver Bullet Award, give advice to new authors, and attend a personal interview with the Berrys, conducted by M.J. Rose, on History Matters. History Matters is an amazing organization, created by Steve and Elizabeth Berry to help preserve rare and unique books, buildings, paintings, sculptures, and decorative art housed in museums and archives around the world. The Berrys use their own money and time, conducting workshops to raise money to protect these precious artifacts. It is nice to know that there are people like Steve and Elizabeth making a difference in the world.
There is one more reason that we attended ThrillerFest: Steve wanted to discuss the particulars of the Cruise for this fall and the London Tour. As a participant in these meetings, I can honestly tell you that the cruise and tours that Shalom European Travel presents involving Steve Berry, really DO involve him. Kathleen makes all of the arrangements but Steve has final say on the places we visit and what we will see at each location. The majority of the tours are led by Steve himself. He is a natural guide. He is so interesting and makes everything exciting. You'll see what I mean next July (2014) when you join us for the London Tour!
If you have any questions or comments regarding the tours, feel free to contact Kathleen at any time:

PS Steve and Elizabeth have to be two of the most fun, not to mention sharpest people I have ever met. For example: I asked Steve to film a spot inviting you to join our tour of London next year. He did it in one take! Now I know that may not be a big deal to him, but I was way impressed! You can see the spot on our Facebook page!
With the kick-off of our new London tour with Steve Berry, I thought you might enjoy reading a repost of our first meeting with Steve and Elizabeth.
I will begin by telling you that I never read novels. I have degrees in French, History, and Educational Technology. I own many books but use them only for reference.
Our story begins in a local computer store. The store normally contains the usual computer store paraphernalia, including a few CDs, and many DVDs. However, on this day, I noticed something unusual: a display that contained three novels, one of which was The Paris Vendetta. The cover caught my eye. I picked it up and read the synopsis. The plot, taking place in Paris, centering around Napoléon Bonaparte, was right up my alley! I had to buy it!
When I arrived home, my wife wanted to see everything that I had purchased. When I showed her the book, she said, "You know that this a novel. You don't read novels." "Yeah but look at the subject matter and the location", I replied. "This book is perfect for me!"
I started reading the book and was totally caught up in the action, although I couldn't help feeling that I was in the middle of an awesome series. I decided to google Steve Berry and Cotton Malone. Sure enough, there were four previous books in the series. I decided to stop reading The Paris Vendetta, purchase the other books and start at the beginning with The Templar Legacy. I became a fan of the series instantly!
I soon found myself checking Steve's website, hoping that he might come to a local bookstore for a signing. Sure enough, I noticed that he would be doing a presentation in May (2012) at the nearby JCC (Jewish Community Center). I told my wife about it and we marked the date on our calendars.
When the day arrived, Kathleen and I got there early. I was so excited to meet Steve and hear him discuss his books! The event was everything that I had hoped it would be. Steve was an incredibly engaging speaker. He held everyone's attention for well over an hour and a half. When Steve asked for questions, he was bombarded with several and he took the time to explain and respond to each and every one.
After his presentation, I followed Steve to his table to purchase a copy of The Columbus Affair and obtain his autograph. During the signing, I noticed that my wife, Kathleen was talking to Steve's wife, Elizabeth. They were smiling and chatting and having a great time. Elizabeth was telling stories about her adventures with Steve. I joined my wife and we continued talking to Elizabeth even after everyone else had left. It was fun to hear the types of things that Steve has done to research his books. Soon Steve came over and we talked for another half hour or so. I can honestly say that Kathleen and I have never had so much fun! Steve and Elizabeth are so kind, accepting, real, and friendly. They really love people and genuinely care about their fans.
As we left the JCC, Kathleen turned to me and said, "Do you think that the Berrys would be interested in leading a tour? We could visit places that appear in Steve's books!" I thought it was a GREAT idea and I encouraged her to email Steve.
When Steve received the email, he put us in contact with Esther Garver, who is the executive director of Steve Berry Enterprises. Esther sent us an email requesting more info. Kathleen explained our idea: a cruise through eastern Europe, designed especially for The Columbus Affair and The Amber Room. Later we heard back from Esther that Steve was onboard (no pun intended). The rest, as we say, is history.
UPDATE: The response to the cruise was overwhelming! Kathleen has enjoyed the opportunity to talk to Steve's fans that will be joining us for the cruise. She tells me all about each and everyone. I can honestly say that we are VERY excited to meet you and to share this exciting week as Steve Berry Fans together!
If you are sad because you missed the cruise, no worries. You can join Steve and Elizabeth in 2014 for an exciting adventure in London! We are already receiving calls from all over the world! The London Tour will be an international affair, much like Steve's books!
We want you to know that both Steve and Elizabeth are VERY excited to meet you! Steve has many wonderful stories to share with you and Elizabeth knows all the best places to shop! Reserve your spot now so that you don't miss out!
'Til next time!
As many of you, I grew up in the era before VCR's, DVD's, and CDs in a time when all that we had for entertainment were VERY basic television, reading, and records. I admit that I enjoyed TV as a source of entertainment, but I L.O.V.E.D. records! I remember spending hours and hours listening to the Tale Spinners for Children series that contained dramatic presentations of such wonderful stories as Robin Hood, The Knights of the Round Table, The Three Musketeers, and so many more. Everyday I would sit in my Grandmothers house listening to these stories, imagining how all of the people and events described by the actors appeared. It was heaven!
My other favorite source of entertainment was books, not reading mind you, just books. My Mother and Grandmother both loved to read. Me, not so much. In order to interest me in reading, my very smart Grandmother began reading to me. I remember sitting next to her and listening to the adventures of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland (two of her favorites). She created different voices for each character! It was just like the records, only better, because it was my Grandma! Those were such wonderful times!
Today, I continue to listen. I seldom read books. As a fan of Steve Berry, I was introduced to his novels through books that soon became audiobooks. The voice in the audiobooks has so much feeling and depth to his presentation that I feel again as I did all those years ago at my Grandmother's house. The man behind the voice is Scott Brick. In case you have not had the opportunity to listen to one of Scott's readings, check out the video below:
Recently, Scott has been passing through an incredibly difficult time in his life. Take a few minutes and
listen to his story, presented in his own voice, on his website. It is truly inspirational.
One final note: As I'm sure you already know, the Steve Berry and Fans Cruise for this fall is sold out. If you missed your chance to go, don't feel bad....
We have a few surprises in store!
'Til next time,
